Nancy Davis

nancyNancy Murphree Davis grew up in a small Alabama town. After a lifelong interest in art, she went on to pursue a degree in painting, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Auburn University in 1991. After years designing and editing non-profit newsletters and moving from place-to-place with her Air Force husband, the move to Arlington prompted Nancy to seize the opportunity to further her interest in printmaking. After a refresher class, at the Art League School, she was accepted as a studio artist at the Lee Arts Center. Trained in intaglio printing, Nancy continues to expand her range of printing techniques to include monotypes and chine-collé, resulting in many prints which are one-of-a-kind. Of late, etched and watercolored collage elements have found their way into her printmaking resulting in a mixed media type of work.
nancyThese new works reveal the multiple layers of color and texture from printmaking while retaining some of the more deliberate compositional planning I employ in my watercolor composition. In printmaking works favor a textural brayered look. Ink is rolled onto a printing plate or homemade stencil with rubber brayers or painted on with rubber tipped brushes. When working solely in watercolor, paintings are bright abstractions of architectural subjects. She commonly uses the white space of the paper as the supporting line work. The pooling and blending of paint lends texture and depth to the flattened composition. In June, Nancy is moving to Clovis, New Mexico. nancyShe hopes to find a group as vibrant and welcoming as the AAA in that community and encourages any members passing through that part of the country to look her up.
