Guidelines for Providing Digital Images for Your Artist Showcase Page

Please provide up to seven digital images.

How to photograph your art: High quality digital images of your art work begin with good photographs of your work.

  • Please photograph your work without frames and without flash.
  • We recommend that you photograph out of doors and use a tripod.
  • Use a quality 35MM camera or a high-end consumer digital camera (4 megapixels or above).
  • If you do three-dimensional work, such as pottery, we recommend that you group several items together against a neutral cloth backdrop. Please do not photograph against a black or very dark background.

For a local source for converting slides or prints to digital format:

One reliable source is

Dominion Camera
112 West Broad Street, Falls Church VA 22046
Telephone: 703-532-6700

Tell them you want your prints scanned to a CD at 300 dpi. Tell them to scan to Jpeg files. You can bring them a mix of slides and prints. For prints, glossy is best, if you have a choice. Please do NOT mark the prints in any way; We will not use the resulting digital images if you do.

If you are scanning yourself: (recommended if you have a high-quality scanner and really know what you are doing):

  • Scan 4 by 6 inch prints in at 300 dpi
  • Scan your slides in AT LEAST 1200 dpi and higher is better.

Preparing your images:

  • It is very difficult to color correct images of art work without having the art in front of you. If you have the software and skill to color correct your images, please do so, but indicate that in a covering note with your CD. If you lack skill or software and want us to try color correcting, please indicate what needs correcting.
  • Please provide the images in the largest dimensions you have, at the highest resolution. Let us resize and compress.
  • Send the CD to the Web Editor through the US Postal Mail. Label the CD with your name and address and phone number. We will copy the files and return the CD.
