What is Studios Underground?Art Underground is the newest northern Virginia arts “destination.” Anchored by the Gallery Underground at 2100 Crystal Drive, it is also flanked by the Studios Underground and is also the home of FotoDC (formerly DC Fotoweek) and Synetic Theatre and its various rehearsal and summer camp spaces. The Red Studios holds 13 working artists and the Blue Studios houses another 7 artists. A third set of studios – the Cyan Studios – is situated between the Gallery Underground and the Red Studios. All two dimensional media are represented in the studios and artists work a collective 20-hours/week or more. Stop in, check out the art or purchase a piece so new it hasn’t seen the world outside the studios! Regular working hours and weekend hours are maintained in the studios. For more information or to arrange an appointment with a particular artist, please email Studio Manager William Adams at william@wgartservices.com. FOR ARTISTS: Studios are offered to artists looking for working space on a six-month (renewable) basis. Studios are mostly shared, and there is a collective work hours requirement for the Blue and Cyan Studios. Sightlines in studios are to be left open so Art Underground visitors can observe artists working. All spaces have running water. Please inquire with Studio Manager William Adams at william@wgartservices.com if interested in getting on the waiting list.

What is the process for studio offers? The Studios Underground is a joint venture between three groups – the Arlington Artists Alliance, the Crystal City Business Improvement District and Vornado, the owner of the Crystal City Underground where the studios are located. Artists who are members of the Arlington Artists Alliance receive preference for studio offers over non-Alliance artists. However, once the Alliance list of interested artists is exhausted, non-Alliance 2-D artists will be offered space on a first-come, first-serve basis. Currently, artists requiring “heavy-up” electrical and/or flame to create art cannot be considered – however, this may change, so please inquire. Non-Alliance artists who live, work or are members of the Gallery Underground may join the Arlington Artists Alliance and thus move to the Alliance member waiting list ahead of non-Alliance members. According to the Arlington Artists Alliance charter, to be eligible for membership, artists must be residents of Arlington County, work in Arlington County or be a member of the Gallery Underground. Membership in the Arlington Artists Alliance is $50/year. The studio manager is currently looking to add more interested artists to the waiting list. Please inquire with Studio Manager William Adams at william@wgartservices.com if interested in adding your name to the waiting list.
