Evelyn Haught paints in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and soft pastels. She began painting in the early 1970s under the tutelage of Washington, D.C. oil and watercolor painter Sally Osborne. Demanding years of working as an English professor, communications director, writer, wife, mother and housekeeper intervened. After a “sabbatical” of 45 years and living in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. for 51 years, she resumed painting in Vero Beach, Fla. in 2010, where she became interested in working in acrylic. During her residence in Vero Beach, she became active in the Vero Beach Art Club, established in 1936, and was elected to its Board of Directors, where she served as an officer. She exhibited regularly at the Vero Beach Janette Beach Gallery, The Vero Beach Museum of Art, The Environmental Learning Center, the Indian River County Cultural Council, as well as at county administrative buildings, court houses, and county libraries, and special exhibitions. She has won prizes for her work, enjoyed regular sales and, upon her return to Northern Virginia in 2024, joined Northern Virginia’s Art League. Favorite subjects include birds, landscapes, seascapes, and still lifes. She also does portraits, abstracts, and occasionally will accept commissions.
