Litwak’s academic background is a BFA in Printmaking and a BS in Biology. She worked as a scientific illustrator for 43 years, primarily with scientists at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Her focus on science communication was a manifestation of her concern about the state of the planet's ecosystems. Her current work is a more personal expression of the same issues.
Since 2020 she has been producing a series of paintings focusing on climate change and biodiversity loss and in 2023 began a series of installations which focus on the issue of plastic waste. This evolved from an exhibit she did with the Washington Project for the Arts in 1983.
She had a solo installation show at Hillyer A&AI in 2025 and has exhibited in many group shows in DC area including at Touchstone and Foundry Galleries, Addison-Ripley, the Katzen Arts Center, and the Washington Women’s Arts Center and at the Crow’s Nest and Maryland Art Place in Baltimore. She has served on the Board of Directors of numerous arts organizations including the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators and currently serves on the Board of the American Society of Collective Rights Licensing.
